Q: Why should I wrap my luggage?
A: Protectabag luggage wrapping is the only fully effective method by which you can know that no-one has entered your luggage without your knowledge, while it has been out of your control.
Luggage wrapping is provided at most major airports around the world, it is available throughout Asia, North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Your luggage is at risk during any journey, from check in to reclaim. It is the journey risk, not the destination that you need to protect yourself against. Luggage wrapping is done in most major airports all over the World, because the risk is global, and remember that most flights from Australia transit through Asia which is long recognised as one of the highest risk areas of the World, and your luggage is at risk during rehandling at those transit points.
Q. But I have locked my bags, isn't that all I need?
A: Definitely not. Locks provide only a very, very low level of security because the vulnerable part on any bag is along the full length of the zip. The easiest method of entry is through the zip teeth (anything pointed will do it eg a ball point pen, car key, hairclip, wire etc). All locks do is to hold the ends of the zip together, locks do not do anything to protect the zip itself.
Q. I am going to use cable ties, will that help?
A: No! For the same reasons as why locks don't give you the security you need.
Q. How does the Protectabag wrap give me security?
A: Once wrapped the only way into your bag is to cut a hole in the plastic, and that will be immediately obvious to you.
Q. If my wrap has a hole in it, or has been cut, what do I do?
A: Leave it on the carousel, and alert security at the arrivals hall.
Q. Won't my bags be opened for inspection at check in?
A: The airports that we operate from use the latest X-Ray screening technology, so there is no longer any requirement for your luggage to undergo physical inspection at check in time. So once wrapped there is no reason at all why your luggage should not arrive at your destination exactly the same as you checked it in.
Q. I have been told that I cannot have my bags wrapped if I am going to the USA, is this correct?
A: This is a common misconception, we actually wrap many bags going to the USA. Under USA flight regulations luggage has to be available for inspection at any point on the journey, so locks and ties are removed by inspectors, this leaves your luggage totally unprotected.
The wrap film we use is clear so that inspectors can see that there are no locks underneath it, and so the wrap will only be removed if that bag is chosen for inspection during transit. The inspection agency will leave a note inside the bag confirming they have opened it.
Luggage wrapping is done in many USA airports, so authorities there are quite familiar with it.
Q. I am concerned that my luggage may be overweight, what can I do?
A: We can weigh it for you, and if necessary we have small carry bags that you can use to repack excess items into.
Q. How do I remove the wrap at my destination?
A: We provide you with a FREE removal tool, which makes removal simple, quick and easy.
Q. Do many people use the Protectabag system?
A: We wrap luggage going all over the World, the total number wrapped and fully secured since we began the service in Australia, is in the hundreds of thousands
Q. I have travel insurance, so wont that cover any items that are stolen?
A: Not entirely. Firstly there are some travel insurers that now exclude from their coverage all items in stored luggage, due to the high number of theft claims they receive. Secondly, even if your insurer does offer coverage there will likely be an excess that you will have to meet before any claim for theft is paid. And most importantly of all, do you really want the hassle, at the start of your holiday, of filling in claim forms and negotiating with insurers?
